Why might a trading position close before reaching its configured stop-loss price?

There are several reasons why your trading position may close at a different price than your configured stop-loss level, or even before the stop-loss price is reached:

Spread Widening

The most common reason for early closure or different execution prices is spread widening. The spread is the difference between the bid price (selling price) and the ask price (buying price). When you set a stop-loss:

  • For sell positions: Your stop-loss is triggered by the ask price, not the bid price
  • For buy positions: Your stop-loss is triggered by the bid price, not the ask price

During periods of rapid price movement or volatile market conditions, spreads can widen significantly. This means your stop-loss may be triggered at a different price than expected, as the available price for execution has moved away from your set level. On highly volatile instruments like gold (XAUUSD), this effect is more pronounced.

For example, if you set a sell stop-loss at 4154.00, but the spread widens, your order may execute at 4154.67 due to the ask price being higher at the time of execution.

Red Folder News Events

High-impact economic news can cause significant price gaps and rapid market movement. If a red folder news event is released:

  • Prices may gap significantly, jumping past your stop-loss level
  • Your position may close at the next available price, which could be substantially different from your stop-loss level
  • Maven does not control the market, and gaps caused by news events cannot be prevented

Manual Closure

Sometimes a position may close without triggering the automatic stop-loss if it was manually closed from your trading platform. Manual closure means the action was initiated from your trading account, not by an automatic trigger.

Note: Always account for spreads when setting your stop-loss levels, particularly on volatile instruments and during times of high market activity.
